GRAN CANARIA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA: 'LA MAGIA DEL VALS'
PROGRAM
- Edvard Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16
- Gabriela Montero An improvisation
- Richard Strauss Waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier (arr. K. M. Chichon)
- Maurice Ravel La Valse
Karel Mark Chichon, OFGC’s current artistic director and member, comes for the first time to the Festival with an evocative program of landscapes, emotions, colors and rhythms that have waltz as its uniting element. Norway will be the first stop of this musical journey, with its composer par excellence, Edvard Grieg, and his famous Piano Concerto, to which Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero will give new perspectives. The audience shall enjoy, too, one of the improvisations that are already her trademark. The show will be completed by a European tour around the different adaptations that have granted this dance from Austria its universal status. Bavarian Richard Strauss’ consanguinity with waltz pulses found the perfect stage in his opera Der Rosenkavalier (2010), “a comedy in music” of Mozart-like resonances and nostalgic aftertaste out of which master Chichon has made a special selection. The concert will finish with Ravel’s La Valse, a brilliant recreation of a world in decay advancing towards the abyss to the rhythm of the Viennese waltz.
The Concert
This will be the seventh consecutive year in which the OFGC ventures outside traditional facilities to play classical music at such an unusual place as the Muelle de la Luz [La Luz Port], where cranes and containers will form an outstanding stage house. It will be the first time the orchestra is conducted at this place by maestro Karel Mark Chichon, the OFGC’s director since May 2017, who has previously conducted the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie of Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Latvia’s National Symphonic Orchestra and the Graz Symphonic Orchestra in Austria.
